Funding periods — what they are and how

they work

Spending within your NDIS plan is important. In the past, some plans may have received extra

funding when the budget ran out. This is no longer possible. By law, the NDIA can only pay for supports that are included in your approved plan.

Why this matters

If your plan was approved on or after 9 October 2024, it will now include:

• Funding component amounts: funding for a specific support or group of reasonable and necessary supports.

• Funding periods: the time that a part of your funding becomes available and how long it needs to last.

If a claim goes over your plan’s total funding amount, funding component amounts or funding periods, it will not be paid.

Once the funding for a period is used up, no more payments can be made for that period — even if supports are still being delivered.

If you need help

You are encouraged to contact the NDIA early if you are at risk of overspending on your plan, or if there is a change in your circumstances.

If you’re unsure or need support, talk to your support coordinator, Local Area Coordinator or early childhood partner. You can also call us on 1800 600 110.
