National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026 Submission 1182

Dear Committee Secretary,

I am writing as the parent of an NDIS participant to provide a submission to the committee’s inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026.

I respectfully ask that this submission be considered as part of the committee’s review of the Bill, particularly in relation to the potential impact on participants and families who rely on essential NDIS supports.

My daughter is 22. Our family is deeply grateful for the NDIS and the dignity, connection and opportunities it has given her.

Before the NDIS, my daughter was isolated and lonely, with few chances to participate in life outside our family. Today, her week is built around essential supports that help her work, socialise, exercise, manage her wellbeing, build independence and stay connected.

Through the NDIS, my daughter accesses supported employment with organisations that understand her needs. Previous attempts at open employment were damaging to her mental health because her disability and support needs were not understood. Supported employment gives her purpose, safety and a meaningful way to contribute.

My daughter also participates in social, community, fitness and movement programs, short supported breaks, therapy, and support worker assistance. These are not luxuries. They are the scaffolding of her life. They help prevent isolation, mental health decline, carer burnout and crisis.

If these supports were reduced or removed, my daughter would not simply “find another option”. Many mainstream services are not equipped to support her safely. We lived that reality before the NDIS, and we do not want her world to become smaller again.

We support sensible reform that addresses fraud, poor providers and misuse of funds. But reform must not punish genuine participants and families who rely on the scheme appropriately.

I ask the committee to ensure that the Bill does not proceed without strong protections for participants and families. In particular, I ask that the committee consider the importance of:

Protecting essential NDIS supports that allow people with disability to work, socialise, access therapy, build independence, maintain wellbeing and participate in the community.

Recognising that social and community participation, supported employment, short-term respite, therapeutic support, fitness, movement, support workers and capacity-building are not luxuries. They prevent isolation, mental health decline, carer burnout and crisis.

Ensuring supports are not reduced or removed before genuine, funded, accessible and appropriate alternatives are already available.

Ensuring any eligibility, reassessment or funding changes are fair, transparent and include strong appeal rights and advocacy support.

Ensuring reforms are co-designed with people with disability, families, carers, advocates and providers who understand the reality of daily life.
