Risk of homelessness and inability to access healthcare due to support cuts (Participant experience)

National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026 Submission 1214

Having an NDIS plan is the only reason I have been able to live an independent life recently. With it I don’t need to depend on another person to be my unpaid carer - e.g. a partner. I do not have supports from my family or a partner, nor should these people be obliged to help me live an independent adult life.

I think the proposed changes to the NDIS are outrageous. I had to go through so much just to get a plan in the first place, for a disability I have had and will have for my entire life. It will not go away, it will not get better. I had to prove that to the NDIS so I could receive funding for supports. To lose that funding in any way, will cripple the life I am currently able to live.

If my supports are cut back, or worse, removed entirely, I will not be able to live independently. I am already spending 70% of my income on housing and bills. I live frugally and constantly monitor my finances; having to pay out of pocket for what the NDIS covers now, I would likely become homeless, starve, be unable to travel anywhere, and be without the health care I need. I am terrified of this happening.
