Opposes NDIS reforms impacting social inclusion and participant rights (Individual advocacy)

National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026 Submission 1218

To the Senate Community Affairs Committee,

I am writing as a concerned member of the Australian community to voice my strong opposition to the NDIS Future Generations Bill and the sweeping changes currently being proposed to the National Disability Insurance Scheme. While I do not personally have a disability, I believe that how we treat our most vulnerable citizens reflects who we are as a society. A fair, robust, and fully funded NDIS is not just a disability issue, it is a community asset that benefits us all. When people with disability are supported to live independently, find employment, and actively engage in public life, our entire society becomes richer, more diverse, and more vibrant. I am troubled by the direction of these reforms. Narrowing access, scaling back community participation supports, and limiting choice of providers will inevitably push people with disability back into isolation. Furthermore, shifting the burden of care away from a structured system onto already strained families and community networks is a short-sighted approach that will cause widespread social and economic fallout. The original vision of the NDIS was a promise of equality, dignity, and inclusion.

I urge the Committee to honour that promise and recommend that the Senate: Halt any funding reductions that target social, recreational, and community access programs. Maintain independent review and appeal mechanisms so that participants retain a fair, democratic avenue to challenge bureaucratic decisions. Protect self-determination and market choice, allowing individuals to decide who enters their homes and supports their lives. Sustainability cannot be achieved at the cost of human dignity and social progress. Any reforms to the scheme must focus on eliminating administrative waste and strengthening participant rights, rather than eroding the core foundation of the NDIS. I urge the Committee to stand with the community, protect the integrity of the scheme, and vote against the passage of the NDIS Future Generations Bill.

Sincerely,

Lucy Robson
