Community access funding reduction impacts social inclusion and mental wellbeing (Provider experience)

National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026 Submission 1258

Hi There,

Good afternoon. I recently heard concerns that NDIS may reduce funding for community access for SIL clients. As a SIL provider, I strongly believe that cutting community access funding would have a serious negative impact on people living with disabilities and their overall wellbeing. Community access is not just about going out for activities. It plays a very important role in improving mental health, emotional wellbeing, social inclusion, independence, and quality of life for people with disabilities.

If community access funding is reduced, many SIL participants may experience:

• Increased social isolation and loneliness because they will have fewer opportunities to interact with others and participate in society.

• Declining mental health, including higher risks of depression, anxiety, stress, and emotional frustration from staying indoors for long periods.

• Reduced independence and confidence, as community participation helps clients develop life skills, communication skills, and decision-making abilities.

• Loss of physical health benefits because many community activities encourage movement, exercise, and active lifestyles.

• Reduced opportunities to build friendships, maintain relationships, and feel connected to the community.

• Negative impact on personal development, learning, and achieving NDIS goals related to social participation and independence.

For many SIL clients, community access is essential for living a balanced and meaningful life. It supports dignity, inclusion, equality, and emotional wellbeing. Reducing this funding may save money in the short term, but it could create greater mental health and support needs in the future.

People with disabilities deserve the same opportunities as everyone else to participate in the community, enjoy social activities, and live fulfilling lives.

Kind Regards
