Concerns regarding access to social and community participation funding for people with acquired brain injuries (Participant experience)

National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026

Submission 1439

To the Committee I’m writing about the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) bill 2026.

I support the idea of keeping the NDIS sustainable in the future, and understand there’s need to deal with fraud/misuse; however, it should also serve those who truly require assistance.

Concerned some changes might make qualifying harder for individuals w/invisible/disabilities like mine diagnosed w/breast cancer Oct ’24; as a non-participant but reassured knowing its availability if needed.

Involved ABI community Perth weekly sessions focused on returning to work & building skills online meetings Kings Park Warriors, a support group for PwAIBIs across these groups noticed consistent theme: around one third attend carers/formal supports suspect many more would benefit from such support Many people living cognitive fatigue memory problems executive function issues slowed processing speed difficult to see outside Because this often appear capable than they really are may not ask for help because don’t feel disabled enough This is where I think needs careful concern that social/community participation funding reductions could reduce access to programs supporting attendance These programs play important role return/work mental health confidence day-to-day functioning While reducing costs within short term it can lead higher healthcare system costs reduced workforce participation From systems perspective whole picture rather immediate savings right support helps stay engaged at work community life independence which long-term reduces elsewhere cost Not against reform believe necessary just recognize invisible disabilities acquired brain injuries properly assessed so fall through cracks disability isn’t visible Thank you considering my submission Kind Regards Western Australia
