Submission 1872

Submission to the Government on the Proposed NDIS Changes

My son , 22, has a genetic disability called Ataxia Telangiectasia, A-T for short. A-T is progressive; it significantly shortens his lifespan: It affects his nervous immunity systems which means that since he was nine years old in wheelchair and makes him approximately one thousand times more susceptible than general population cancers. It robs normal life opportunities social connections. Due to its unpredictable nature ’ needs can rapidly change overnight from being able weight-bare during transfer suddenly not hold own weight over night His fine motor skills are constant slow demise speech slurred due continuous loss muscle control getting worse saliva production through roof important note no intellectual disability goes all this amazing positive attitude thanks ndis The ndis currently single most amazing thing happened grateful ever implementation moment mean Support Workers chose feels as humanly possible condition three weeks local gym world away house apart hospital visits carer interactions gym place gets interaction trainers other clients attending vital wellbeing scope improvement purpose what makes worth living when well cannot get health spirals As glaring obvious upcoming changes decided write following:

Suggestions:

  • Retain the 21-day decision timeframe for unscheduled reassessment requests,
  • restore the “deemed decision” safety net for missed deadlines.
  • Remove the “unanticipated” qualifier from changes regarding informal-supports adjustments.

autonomy and intimate care. Restore future-focused capacity-building as a fundable category before carers age out.” I strongly urge you to co-consult/co-design with stakeholders (participants, their families, carers, providers) and take time to get this Bill right. I absolutely agree that we need to find a way for the national disability insurance scheme ( disability services act of [year]) to be sustainable and future-proofed but please\ndo not decrease participants’ quality-of-life indicators or other measures used in assessing needs. The majority cost blowouts are from providers who automatically attach an “NDIS price tag” \nto all services AND products that would have been less expensive prior to implementation; e.g., claiming $[amount] per hour is almost extortionate due primarily because it exceeds private rates significantly more than necessary given service caps. Possibly some savings can also come through decreasing these fee caps where they exist unnecessarily high relative to market value. I express my gratitude at Australia having such inclusive support systems currently available; sincerely hope our country will continue on its path forward without reverting back under proposed changes which may reduce access or increase costs further down line. Thanking you again reading submission made by The Growing Space & considering same carefully. Do contact me using following details if interested discussing any points raised.
