National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026

Submission 1899

SUBMISSION TO THE NDIS BILL INQUIRY - May 29th,

What the NDIS means to me right now

I currently have two children on the NDIS and their support has transformed our family from being barely able to survive each day due to crisis into one where we’ve made significant structural changes regarding how we live and manage ourselves. The proposed amendments worry us most because it seems like there’s an increase focus towards parents’ responsibilities without quantifying what these entail or understanding families better than they do today. For instance: asking questions about providing care at specific hours per child with high intensity levels such as de-escalating meltdowns which are considered among highest intensities of all disabilities. This makes no sense when considering parental burnout rates; sustaining them isn’t just essential but also economically efficient way provide supports while maintaining a clearer definition is welcome rather than blurring lines between reasonable expectations versus unrealistic demands that undermine entire system. We’re concerned over planned reductions in scheme participants, fearing this might mean my kids won’t be eligible anymore depending upon assessment criteria used by authorities. Such decisions would devastate not only myself & my disabled children who need systems believing everyone should enjoy life regardless disability status but also those slipping away into spaces unable cope properly enjoying lives marginalized for higher needs deemed less important.

Use of standardised functional capacity assessments

I have heard that the proposed tool for assessments has not even been tested AT ALL ON psycho-social disabilities. Which doesn’t surprise me. My experience with the NDIS has shown me that it is geared towards physical disabilities. This is serious oversight.Anytoolthatisusedasastandardisedassessmentneedstohaverobustevidenceofitsefficacyonthetargetgroupsthatatwillbeusedona clear wrap aroundsystemthat willhavesuitablyqualifiedpeopleinterpretingitanapplyingitcorrectly.

Responsibilities don’t even have to think about,

let alone spend hours of their lives dedicated to changing. There are thousands of families you won’t hear from because they just couldn’t put together a submission this week even if they might have really wanted to. Their silence becomes the social licence to take action that hurts them and their loved ones.I beg you to consider this in all you do.

Worsening Care For Children One thing I worry is what government statistics misinterpreted data. The increasing access NDIS autism

particular isn’t just families flocking honeypot luxuries treasure. There genuinely an increase level need there. It farcical Thriving Kids address extent expected.Currently hearing stories families can cope child’s disability being referred chid safety assessment clearly aren’t parenting well enough. My family also told Safe Families when my disabled child behaviour out control which rightly said was disable issue Ignoring scale needs contradiction safeguard children You guarantee reduce funding will care supports getting pressure on families When break surrender children suddenly gets expensive complicated Government The absolute best way prevent all ensure children, familes support first place It makes sense wind back when ramping up one another find out but listen people like me know now act ### Impact Of Reducing Or Removing Community And Social Supports These supports move needle for our family nothing else does Seeing allied health professional over $200 weekly fortnightly give some small strategy then spend hours implementing transformation it make By comparison same plus spent having 3-4 hours adult not parent fresh just they otherwise wouldn’t get while modelling things they learn helping regulate nervous system ways struggling burnt parents capable of Meanwhile rest the family have breather intensity 1:1 care loud noises high emotions feeling living survival pervades house most time We eat meal together jokes might even able go outside little while Will hear from so many families with community and social supports we’re luxurious life where live help swan around

doing nothing while the paid help does all the work. We get just enough of a breather that we can come back to centre just a little bit. Enough to just be ready to launch into the next day. Families like ours can’t think in weeks or months, but to just know that you’ll probably make it through to the next day with the whole family going at least ‘ok’ is an awesome gift sometimes. I think it’s wise to be aware of how much of these supports people have and what they are using them for. As always, a sensitive and nuanced approach is required, rather than just a blunt instrument that strips away people’s access to these essential and life giving supports. Removing these supports at a large scale misses the point that the goal of the NDIS should be about disabled people living lives at an acceptable standard. Removing these supports will plummet disabled people into a sate where they can’t access things, they can’t go out, they are even more isolated, and their mental health, and their families deteriorate … It will not save costs in the long run – Just create a looming crisis, And Create unconscionable inequity between those With disabilities AND Those without - Where as Long AS You Are Not Disabled YOU Will Be OK.
