National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026 Submission 1940

NDIS Personal Statement –

My name is , and I have Multiple Sclerosis. I use a wheelchair, and the NDIS supports me very well.

I live in Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) with 24/7 Onsite Overnight Support (OOS). Having control over who attends to me at 2am — or at any other time — is critical to my safety at home. At the moment, I can speak to the manager of the service and we can try to resolve issues or remove a worker from the site if necessary.

Last year, we ceased the contract with the agency that was managing the OOS, and as a collective we hired a new agency. The previous agency really did not care and had no idea how to resolve issues. Having support workers that you can trust, and who are capable, is essential. I can personally attest that my stress levels were extremely high in the year before we changed providers. Having control over who enters your home is critical to my wellbeing.

I am trying hard to stay as strong and independent as possible. The NDIS supports me to see an exercise physiologist, and I exercise regularly in the pool. My exercise physiologist is invaluable in maintaining my strength and endurance. This helps me remain safe when transferring and is critical for my physical, emotional, and social health.

I am concerned about the proposed changes to the NDIS legislation, especially Section 40A, where the Minister or CEO may be able to override health authority advice and cut funding.

The NDIS has not communicated with me about the proposed changes, and I am feeling quite anxious about my future.

If my social and community supports were changed, I would find it impossible to attend my pool exercises or even go shopping for groceries. I need my support workers. Any reduction in support would negatively impact my physical, emotional, and social health.

I completely rely on my support coordinator to help me manage my NDIS account. My cognition has declined, and I become extremely anxious when managing my NDIS budget.

I trust that she genuinely cares for my wellbeing and understands Multiple Sclerosis.

I also need occupational therapists to write reports when my disability progresses and to suggest ways of maintaining my independence.

Multiple Sclerosis cannot be cured. I can only hope to maximise my independence, dignity, and joy with the support of the NDIS.
