Submission 1968 distress and, particularly since COVID-19, a decrease in his confidence and more pronounced social withdrawal. When I have mentioned this to his psychiatrist, the response has been that his condition is degenerative. He looks forward to his support workers including Occupational Therapist; w/o them no other conversations except me; OT extensive MH experience & works within therapeutic context understanding impact persistent psychotic symptoms She’s working towards increasing independence which gives hope as ageing likely impacts what can be provided into future.Social exclusion stigma imposed due inadequate services over years few were helpful but shut down attitude continued exclusion reinforced internalised worthlessness when attending guitar making workshop art group he was beginning develop Better Sense Self In words said “felt good nothing” These workshops don’t exist now many yrs state psychosocial closed them down Even if reopened unlikely imagine engaging grp after so long last engagement.He had same support worker OT several yrs due choice control.These committed life some level of engagement This not hoped something valued him.Knowing totally reliant on me great help.Hope remedied social phobia restored time. Will happen forced engage with state funded services always let him down.Unfortunately age where little mental health support When young first onset psychosis ineligible for intensive youth mental health services available As progressed persisted received poor mental health or psychosocial service Psychosocial service agreed quite traumatised would never again.This why dreading Labor government proposal divert people states Support never suitable son certainly NDIS providing fosters better sense self through familiar regular and committed workers.

These workers have stayed with him for many years and they are the closest thing to friends or family he has, apart from me. I am aware that some people may benefit from State run services but not everyone. NDIS participants are a diverse group of people. Some people already engage psychosocial organisations such as MIND for their NDIS supports so transition to the State could reduce impacts because existing support networks might remain intact; this does not apply here, as it’s critical these constant committed familiar individuals provide continuity & connection which would otherwise cease.
