Hello,

My daughter is 16 and lives with Intellectual Disability, autism and dyspraxia. Because of the ndis supports she’s received since she was 4 she is able to function in society, attend a special school, has built her own craft business, and has a part time job.

Without the intensive therapy that she received from a young age, and the therapy and social support she receives now, she wouldn’t be able to talk, run, jump, dress herself, shower herself, eat without choking, the list goes on.

I understand that the ndis budget has blown out and needs to be curbed, but I do wonder whether a more appropriate way would be to lessen the amount that providers and support workers charge for sessions. This would put pressure on areas and things definitely, but perhaps would not so greatly affect the livelihoods and quite simply, survival of many many people living with things that a lot of us can not understand.

Taking the social and community participation funding from participants will put direct pressure on caregivers to provide these supports and fill in the gaps. Some caregivers are simply not able to provide this because of their own disabilities. Some may be able to, but at the expense of their mental health, job, and therefore the mental health and safety of other members of their families.

What I’m trying to say is that there are many many knock on effects from taking these supports from people. Only when you have lived experience in a situation like this can you really understand how much it takes to support someone in these spaces to function in life, let alone thrive.

I strongly believe that the amount that the workers receive could be changed, and still be successful, rather than ripping supports from the participants, which will also leave hundreds of people without jobs too. Let them receive slightly less money for the work they do, to create a more long lasting and sustainable future, not only for people living with disabilities, but for the therapists and support workers too.

Thanks so much for your time
