I am writing to express my concerns regarding the upcoming NDIS changes and their impact as a family member of an individual with significant needs. My child currently does not utilize much funding from his NDIS account due primarily because we continue providing substantial home-based assistance until recently when he expressed interest moving into independent living which marks both positive progress but also vulnerable transition period where appropriate support can determine success vs struggle over longer term periods, at current stage he doesn’t require high levels ongoing support what needed practical temporary aid while learning manage independence includes budgeting meal planning shopping maintaining household understanding bills routines transport emotional regulation confidence daily responsibilities These aren’t about creating dependence they’re preventing long-term dependency My son capable young man appears neurotypical highly capable learned mask difficulties well short periods presenting coping without support however comes at significant mental &emotional cost unsustainable long periods many don’t see exhaustion stress dysregulation behind closed doors helping him remain well functioning Without adequate support during this critical life phase real risk losing ability maintain independent living or wellbeing The burden on families continues heavy placing ongoing emotional physical financial strain already doing everything possible help loved ones succeed I deeply concerned reducing flexibility limiting access supports now may create far greater future costs NDIS broader community systems Investing early gives adults opportunity build capacity resilience independence before reaching crisis point Many people become more reliant welfare services, mental health hospital systems funded care later in life With right support genuinely believe my son has potential work part-time open employment future Given time experience gradual skill building within 10 years even full-time completely independently only achievable if supports available these formative years to build that foundation.

Families like ours are not asking for lifelong dependence on the system. We ask practical flexible supports at right time our young people can become contributing independent members society greatest extent possible. The transition into adulthood challenging Removing reducing depends critical period risks undoing years progress may ultimately create greater social and economic costs future. I ask lived experiences families participants be genuinely considered when implementing these changes particularly capable motivated but still require support bridge gap between dependence independence. Thank you taking time consider real-world impact decisions have individuals across Australia. Kind regards
