National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026

Submission 2342

Our child is diagnosed Level 2 Autistic. We have several serious concerns about the proposed Bill: Evidence of Daily Impact through standardised ‘Functional Assessments’ conducted by non-trained specialists unfamiliar with their child’s condition, do not knowing them personally.

The diagnosis was made over approximately two years via work done collaboratively between psychologists and a neuropsychologist on assessing high masking autism traits within children like ours who are often perceived as perfect students academically but struggle significantly during daily living activities such as interpreting others’ emotions or managing sensory issues including light sensitivity in public spaces where they appear normal yet functionally challenged due primarily because these professionals lack sufficient context regarding our daughter’s true capabilities outside formal educational settings requiring constant preparation planning before after outings including schools which necessitates ongoing support from highly trained OTs and Psychologists specializing specifically around autistic needs enabling her ability navigate both socially emotionally while also dealing effectively with various physical limitations imposed upon her throughout life.

  • Less capacity to be able to attend school. Schooling may need to be stopped. This leads to less positive social and economic outcomes (e.g., job-readiness) for her.- Less ability to develop skills and strategies to understand herself and advocate for her needs, because she can participate outside of home such as supermarkets or outings which become an economic burden over time due to bullying isolation masking leading anxiety depression heightened autistic traits burnout again this cost society economically long-term- The real possibility repeated severe meltdowns burnouts hospitalisation again this cost society economically longterm - The threat self harm bill seriously puts people at risk again it cost society economically longterm - Further strain family relationships potential breakdown again societal economical burden imposes costs governments longterm inability workforce with ndis supports we have without ndis support I’d likely stop work benefits try supporting my child again societally economica
