Opposes NDIS bill due to concerns about personal care access and mental health decline (Individual advocacy)

National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026

Submission 2366

Hello,

I am a resident of Northcote in Naarm/ Melbourne. I am a community engagement worker and have worked across the community services sector over the past 5 years or so.

Many of my loved ones and community members I have built relationships with through work are on the NDIS. I am writing to say that I oppose the new NDIS bill.*

The NDIS has made a huge difference to the lives of many individuals, families and communities since its establishment. I have witnessed that it has enabled people much greater independence, choice, autonomy and enabled participation in their families and communities in a way that would not be possible without the supports they receive through the NDIS.

I fear that without these supports, people living with a disability would not be fully equipped with the support they need to be healthy and well, to sustain a meaningful social life, to participate in community, work and other aspects of society in the way they would like to. Further, I am gravely concerned about the potential harm that could be caused by changes proposed under this legislation. Some examples include (but is limited to): receiving personal care from someone who makes them uncomfortable being naked around; neglect due to carers failing to show up for appointments etc). A beautiful element observed firsthand among those using the scheme includes having control over what type of assistance one receives based upon individual needs rather than imposed choices which may limit freedom or ability as others might enjoy more options available depending solely off body shape/size limitations. The least we can offer such persons should always allow access towards making decisions regarding their own health & wellbeing including healthcare services and opportunities within local communities where they feel safe participating freely alongside peers alike regardless physical appearance differences.

As an advocate working closely daily amongst individuals affected directly by disabilities, I also strongly believe there will likely occur significant decline mental health if current proposals are implemented into law. This deterioration stems largely because lack agency over lives experienced along side reduced accessibility toward engaging meaningfully across various societal facets - ranging anywhere between employment prospects through educational settings right down till recreational activities enjoyed collectively with friends/family members alike. Increased risks associated abuse/neglect coupled traumatic experiences become inevitable without adequate safeguards put forth ensuring safety remains paramount priority above all else during every interaction involving disabled community members involved throughout day-to-day living situations.

The Bill in its present form poses HARMFUL implications warranting immediate rejection before any further consideration given Parliamentarian approval process.

PLEASE do the right thing on behalf these people who deserve autonomy to make informed personal life decisions.
