National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026
Submission 2484
Submission to the Senate Inquiry into the new NDIS Bill
The NDIS participant I advocate for is my 21-year-old nephew, who lives with a permanent and significant disability and high, complex support needs.
He requires one-to-one support to do the most basic daily tasks and to participate and engage in meaningful activities. He would not be able to go out into the community and do simple things that most typically functioning people take for granted. He cannot be left at home alone.
Without the level of supports that he currently has in place, he would not leave the house and he would become socially isolated and regress even further.
My sister would also need to give up work completely to care for him, resulting in increased isolation for her. This would also have a negative impact on her quality of life, put further strain on family relationships and take away her ability to contribute financially and retain her identity as someone other than a carer.
My nephew did not choose to have a disability. Having dignity and quality of life are not luxuries.
If the proposed changes to the NDIS are enacted I am deeply concerned about how the future will look for my nephew and his quality of life.
I urge you to listen carefully to the real people who will potentially be irrevocably damaged by these proposed changes.
This support is as much for the participants as it is for the families. By taking this away, you are not only limiting the quality of life for the participants but you’re harming their families and carers also.
