Submission Opposing Labor’s Proposed Changes to the National Disability Insurance Scheme

(NDIS)

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed changes to the NDIS put forward by the Labor Party. The NDIS is a vital program that provides essential support and services to Australians with disabilities, empowering them to live more independent and fulfilling lives.

The proposed changes raise significant concerns for the following reasons:

  1. Risk to Individual Choice and Control The foundation of the NDIS is to provide participants with genuine choice and control over their supports. The proposed modifications over simplify and centralize decision-making, reducing the autonomy of participants and limiting their ability to tailor support to their unique needs.

  2. Potential Reduction in Funding and Support There is a risk that these changes will lead to cuts or caps on funding, which could have a devastating impact on the quality of life and opportunities available to participants, especially those with more complex or high needs. This will result in reduced functioning and even deaths of current or future participants.

  3. Increased Bureaucracy and Processing Delays The proposed changes might introduce additional layers of bureaucracy, causing delays in accessing support and increasing administrative burdens on both participants and service providers.

  4. Undermining the Original Principles of the NDIS The NDIS was designed to be a participant-centred scheme, focused on fairness, equity, and empowerment. Any changes should strengthen, not dilute, these principles. The powers this bill provides to the government to make changes without consultation or participation from NDIS participants and their supporters are unconscionable and directly in opposition of the principles of the scheme.

I urge the government to reconsider the proposed changes and engage directly with participants, disability advocates, and service providers to ensure that any reforms truly enhance the scheme’s accessibility, effectiveness, and fairness.

The NDIS has transformed the lives of many Australians with disabilities, and it is crucial that this progress is preserved and built upon.

Thank you for considering this submission.

Sincerely,

NDIS participant
