National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026

My sons need constant care and support, the NDIS has given them both the opportunity to thrive within their communities. They wouldn’t be where they are today without it. My sons will never be cured, there is no cure for ASD, they will need a of lifetime support. They’re incredible, funny little boys who just want to enjoy the life they have at school, at home with family and friends. One wants to drive trains and make coffee, the other wants to be a police officer, they’re 14 and 10, they have their whole lives ahead of them and to be cut off from the support of the NDIS, those dreams will stay just that, dreams. THEY, AS WITH ALL PARTICIPANTS DESERVE TO LIVE!! As a single parent I cannot afford therapies on my own. I can barely afford rent, bills, groceries and there’s no relief coming. Everyday Australians and their families are struggling more than ever with the cost of living, how will we be able to afford anything our children need? Just become homeless? Stop paying bills? Steal groceries? Get a job that has 10,000 other cheap labour applicants? Take on three or more jobs? For the last few years it has been difficult obtaining therapist to fit within the NDIS payment restrictions, not to mention constantly being wait-listed and then forgotten about down the track because there are participants in severe immediate need of therapists in our area. We do not have a car so we rely on public transport which restricts where we can apply for services since it takes anywhere between an hour or two, location dependant, to get anywhere. The boys have two other siblings still in school, we have three different schools to get to every day, on public transport come rain, hail or shine. How do I get them all to school, attend therapist hours travel each way, then pick them up again? Without family or support to fill in the gaps for my other children? My children and many others aren’t allowed to have therapies on school grounds anymore and yet you’re going to push all the disabled students onto already stressed, overworked and underpaid teachers, expecting them to fill in the gaps. They barely have time for their own classes not to mention there’s never any funding from the education department for support within classrooms. My 14yr old started yr 7 in a special options class this year. He needs one on one support, the education department won’t grant it, he gets one, one on one person once a week because the education department can’t afford to have someone there for him full time. In a special options class we specifically chose because he’s high support needs!! That’s crazy!! How is that helping?! More kids will suffer greatly, neurodivergent and neurotypical alike.

I have been audited twice, was made to feel as if I was stealing from the NDIS when in actuality I was paying the bills that needed to be paid. And what came of those audits? Nothing because I was doing exactly what is required me when it comes to their payments. The providers we were seeing were the ones overcharging and it was my responsibility to tell them to stop. Domestic violence, being homeless and services closing down has also had a major impact with acquiring therapists. Thankfully their plans rolling over have been a great benefit for my boys, unlike other participants who use their funds over the year only to have them roll over leaving nothing for the following year. Now we’ll be lucky if they ever receive therapy again.
My children, as with all participants, deserve to live the best lives they can, to the best of their capacity, everyday. They shouldn’t be stressed, wondering how or where help is coming from or how they’re going to eat, do the daily tasks able bodied people take for granted, take medications, use specialised medical equipment, go to necessary therapies, spend money in the community, go shopping for crying out loud!! ACCESSIBILITY BENEFITS EVERYONE!
And the most aboherrent fact of all is the rise in deaths these cuts are causing. There has been a 200% increase in deaths due to NDIS funding cuts. That family of four in QLD, at their wits end, plans cut, taken away, resulting in an entire family left hopeless, abandoned with no relief in sight, now dead. Your constituents are dying due to funding cuts and there will be many many more on your hands. We have the reports stating what needs to be done to continue supporting participants, the financial benefits it brings to our economy and yet they’re ignored. As one of the richest nations in the world, we’re moving backwards into the dark ages, shame shame shame!!
