National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026
Submission 3030
Im writing as a concerned parent and member of the disabled Community who is terrified.
As a single mother living with significant physical and severe psychosocial disabilities, I am terrified by the proposed NDIS changes that could halve social and community access supports.
I have 19-year-old twins , and with autism (Level 2–3),
intellectual disability, ADHD, anxiety and other support needs. Before the NDIS, I genuinely feared for both my future and theirs. The stress and isolation contributed to repeated suicidal thoughts and hospital admissions for me.
If social and community access supports are reduced, my son could lose access to his day program, weekend activities, church, and even the one hour of paid work he currently enjoys each week. These supports are not luxuries—they are what keep him connected, regulated and participating in the community.
Without those supports, his anxiety and distress can escalate significantly. In the past, when he has become severely dysregulated, it has resulted in violence towards me. After eight back surgeries and ongoing health issues, I simply cannot physically or emotionally provide the level of support he needs on my own. Nor should my adult children have to rely solely on their mother for every aspect of their lives.
Support workers provide independence, dignity, safety and a future for my children. They also give me hope that my children will be able to live meaningful lives when I am no longer here.
My question is: How can the Government justify reducing supports that keep vulnerable Australians safe, connected and participating in society, when the likely outcome will be increased isolation, family breakdown, mental health crises and higher long-term costs?
Instead of cutting participant supports, why not address the excessive provider costs that many families see charged across the sector?
Kind regards
