National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026

Submission 3162

The proposed cuts to Psychosocial funding will have a PROFOUND effect on my life, my adult child with disabilities and our family overall.

For the last eight years , I have been able to participate in the community in some semblance of a normal senior citizen.

Prior to this I was a solo carer of a adult child with complex physical and Mental health issues. For 31 years.

My child receives support through NDIS and a SIL package 24/7 one to one care with a waking shift overnight as they can go without sleep for up to 72 hours at a stretch.

They are unable to maintain any skills of daily living without full support.

They have seventeen various diagnosis.

The most profound and complex is

Autism ,

Schizophrenia,

Borderline personality disorder,

ADHD ,

Epilepsy

Vision impaired

Heart issues

previous cancer diagnosis which required surgery & chemotherapy. Overtones of Cereal

Palsy

Chronic Fatigue

Aggressive behaviour.

Impaired cognition

And other chronic health issues such as Asthma , Dental Decay and more.

Without NDIS full funding , they most likely will have to be admitted to long term Mental Health services for the remainder of their life. As my child is in their mid thirties , I view this prospect as being a “ life sentence“ without parole !!

I cannot return to being their full time carer again.

The long term toll on my physical and mental health has been debilitating, chronic illness etc.

Due to being their carer ( I am now their guardian and advocate ) I lived in a isolated bubble of fear, hyper vigilance , insomnia , social and community exclusion , unable to attend and participate in normal family activities, attend medical appointments, inability adhere to any type of routine due to chronic insomnia, victim of verbal and physical assaults, suicidal ideation, poverty ( I have not had a holiday in 35 years ) breakdown of personal relationships and friendships. Lack of financial stability ( no superannuation) lack of resources and live in public housing.

My question for the Federal government and Mr Albanese is who cares for the carers once the 160,000 proposed NDIS recipients are cut from the scheme ?

Sadly we undoubtedly will see more sad headlines of parents resorting to the end and final last act of what they perceive as a act of compassion .

No parent should be placed in the position where there is no end in sight to their carer responsibility for rest of their life .

No further words are needed to highlight what this means.

Parents cannot and should not be expected to provide 24/7 care without support .

Removing funding for NDIS recipients to go out and participate in the community with paid support workers will be the straw that literally broke the camels back. For the families still providing live in one to one care.
