National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026
Submission 3237
Dear
I am writing to you about the NDIS Future Generations Bill 2026. I am asking you not to cut funding to the community access/participation part of NDIS funding. Whilst this may seem like the easiest way to reduce costs in the long run it will have dire consequences and roll on costs to the health care system.
I am an ex nurse and have worked as a support worker for various clients who require NDIS disability support since 2020. I worked this role throughout the pandemic and continue to support people now.
I care deeply about the people I have worked with including someone with MND, someone with a chronic long term mental health disability, an ageing person, a person with ME/CFS and more.
As a nurse I love helping and supporting these people to maintain their independence and their connection to their community. I see how much their NDIS funding has helped them to remain in their community and also to do the things they could not do alone. Shopping for example, for you and I this is a simple everyday thing which we do without thought. For a person with long term chronic mental health disability this is a scary, sometimes terrifying thing to do every week. Having a calm support worker to walk along side them and reassure them each step of the way is essential. They often cannot order online and this too is a completely foreign and scary concept which could take them literally hours.
I oppose whole heartedly the cuts to the funding of community access/participation and support as this will result in many people not living independently and not having the confidence to even leave their residence. I think in the long term this will mean more costs to the health care system with more of these people needing medical/hospital care particularly if they remain isolated at home without moving.
What will you do about this? Will you contact me? Will you meet with me about this? Will you write back with your position on the matter? Do you really honestly understand the practicality of living with a disability and not being able to be in your community, even just to do your shopping.
Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing back from you.
