Opposition to NDIS cuts due to bipolar disorder and suicidal ideation (Participant experience)

National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026

Submission 324

Hi. I am writing to let you know that I am against the cuts to the NDIS that are being proposed in this bill.

I have bipolar and I will never be cured. It is a lifelong illness that has ups and downs even with treatment and medication.

I was a teacher for over 20 years and I am a mother. I struggled and had many hospital stays and suicide attempts. I eventually had to give up work altogether. I didn’t think I would ever work or function again.

I have been supported by the ndis for 3 years. With this help I have been able to do some study, get my life in some kind of order, live in cleaner and safer conditions, improve my social phobia and anxiety and do some regular casual work. My disability isn’t better but my life is better. I know that without the ndis I would not be here.

However, with the demonisation of NDIS participants and the scheme in general I am again in a place where I am suicidal. The Australian community has heard politicians complain about rorting of the system and put the blame onto disabled people rather than on the providers and suppliers who are ripping us off. You have done nothing to stop this and this bill confirms what everyone is thinking.

On behalf of myself and everyone else with a disability, I implore you to reject this bill. It is going to have severe consequences for participants and their families. There will be people who lose their lives and there will be people who take their lives. If this bill passes you will have blood on your hands.
