National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026
Submission 3465
To Whom It May Concern:
NDIS SCHEME AMENDNENT
I’m submitting this submission from a carers point of view.
My daughter is 32 years old, lives with my husband and myself at home. She has a severe intellectual disability and level 3 profound autism. My daughter is non-verbal and has little to no communication and has many behaviours of concern due to her disabilities.
My husband is almost 76 years old and has Parkinson’s disease and I’m almost 70 and the responsibility to care for my daughter and husband is with me. We have no informal supports.
We have always both cared for our daughter, but now my husband is finding it more difficult to help due to his disability of Parkinson’s disease.
To put it into perspective, my daughter needs support with every detail of her life from self-care , money management, communication, dealing with escalated behaviours, and 1:1 support in the community, to name just a few.
I’m particularly concerned about the proposed reduction in Assistance with Social and Community participation. My daughter goes to a day program 5 days a week which is covered under this category. It gives my daughter time away from us and participate in the community with trained support workers. Also, they are supporting her with the necessary life skills for when we can no longer care for her. It also gives me and my husband some respite to recharge our batteries.
I’m concerned that if this funding is reduced, I will not have the energy to care for her properly and as a result will have to look to place her into a group home sooner rather than later. Our preference is to keep her at home for as long as we can.
Please don’t cut funds for day programs as it will have a negative impact on participants and carers.
