Subject: Concern Regarding NDIS Reforms

To whom it may concern,

I am writing as a very concerned young member of Australian society regarding the current NDIS reforms and the impact they are having on people with disabilities and their families. As the sister of someone with special needs, and as someone with basic empathy for others, I strongly oppose the current reforms that are being put into place.

Whilst I understand the need to address fraud and ensure the long-term sustainability of the NDIS, I believe reforms should focus on organised abuse of the system rather than reducing essential support for vulnerable Australians. I believe that there are smarter ways to target these occurrences without harming the many, and with all of the negative things happening in our world today, this seems like another loss and should not be seen as something that is positive for the future.

Recent events and growing public concern highlight the immense pressure many disability families are already under. I worry that continued reductions in support and uncertainty surrounding the scheme will place even more families into crisis. There is absolutely no need to take a shortcut to fixing issues that only create more, how will these families be able to do anything for themselves, others or YOU, if they don’t have access to the support that they need to live.

Meaningful consultation with people with disabilities is imperative when making decisions that directly affect their lives and wellbeing. Australians living with disability deserve to be heard and treated with dignity, respect and compassion. Anyone at any time could be in need of the support that NDIS provides Australians, life is precious and people forget sometimes it can change without any warning. How can people so easily disregard the people that work so hard to do everything in their power to live meaningful lives? They deserve it as much as you and I.

I urge the government to reconsider the direction of these reforms and ensure the protection of essential supports. I believe that there is a member of the government, or more, that is able to come up with another solution that is better for the greater good of everyone. Everyone in Australia contributes to making your government possible by doing what you want, sometimes you need to do what we want.

Us youths are tired. We don’t want to have to fix all of the problems your government has created for everyone when you are all gone.

Thank you for your consideration,

Aiyana Nicholas
