Adult sibling requiring support due to cuts to home visits (Family or carer experience)

National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026

Submission 391

Hi

I am a Special Education teacher at a public secondary school. I see how hard it is for parents raising children with disabilities.

As a sibling of an adult with a disability, I also see how hard my mum has to fight for my sister to ensure she gets the supports she needs. It is stressful. Believe me, having a disabled family member is no golden goose experience and it angers me to see the hoops the family has to jump through for her to get support.

Another friend has a bed-ridden mother who soils herself, cannot wash herself, nor take care of herself. My friend works full-time in an extremely challenging school, but it offers subsidised housing. She has to come home to care for her mum and has so often been at her wits end.

It took months before she was able to get home visits from a support nurse. Now the cuts have affected these as well.

I cannot comprehend how the government justifies withholding support for vulnerable citizens. The stress it causes on families is huge, and the input and support from community groups and support workers is invaluable.

Please speak up for those that need a voice. We dont need a repeat of the Port Douglas family tragedy.

Kind regards
