National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026
Submission 41
16 May 2026
Dear Minister Butler,
I write to you respectively asking you to read this letter.
It is Saturday 16th May at 3.15pm, just after I have finished watching a 1.5 hour zoom from the Self Managers Hub. Not an exciting way to spend my weekend, but typical of the level of dedication and responsibility I feel as a mother of an adult son with disability. I was able to allocate this 1.5 hours to personal capacity building learning as my son was using his NDIS plan to engage one of his support team to access the community and get out of the house.
I am horrified in hearing that you propose to cut community access supports across the board by 50%. 50%! I cannot imagine the impacts this will have for people with disability and their families.
50% less opportunities for community connection. Less community connection directly affects personal safeguarding and reduced opportunities for contribution.
50% less opportunities for independence and skill building in natural and typical ways away from home.
50% less opportunities for access to work, health and lifestyle options.
50% less possibilities for non paid care givers to work, look after themselves and other family members and spend time building their knowledge and capacity to provide lifelong support to their disabled loved one.
Do you REALLY, genuinely understand this impact and if so, do you think this is fair and right?
The NDIS has been a game changer for my son and many others I know and I am grateful and committed to self managing his plan ethically and correctly. I understand the increasing costs need to be curbed but cutting peoples plans is not the way. It is not humane.
Fraud absolutely needs to be focused on. Unethical providers offering poor service need better checks and balances. Costs paid by the NDIA to Lawyers dramatically need to be reduced.
But participants plans do not need to be slashed as an easy option for cost reduction.
Please listen to the Disability community. We live and breathe this and know what we need.
The NDIS is our lifeline.
Thank you for reading my letter.
With sincerity and hope,
