Submission on the NDIS Amendment Bill
Name:
I am a social worker and have been a carer and support person for someone going through the NDIS application process and informal support co-ordinator for disabled people who were not receiving appropriate care from the NDIS.
I have watched many disabled people crushed by the inadequacy of the NDIS, being refused supports that their clinicians and practitioners are advocating for, overwhelming, unmanageable and unrealistic administrative expectations and incredibly long waitlists and wait times for services these communities deserve by right.
My concerns are that this bill will further entrench these injustices and inadequacies and will rob disabled people of the very few supports they have available to them.
Increased contact and touch points are unrealistic and place needless burden on people already struggling to meet life’s expectations and their medical needs in this system. For many disabled people managing the current administrative requirements is already extremely arduous. It was from supporting disabled people through the NDIS that has even discouraged me from seeking diagnosis and pursuing NDIS support- because it was already so inadequate. I have watched people fight tooth and nail for basic services they require only to have them revoked on the next plan. There should be no further limitations to plan changes or additions, or reduction in accessibility of supports.
Any bill amendments should be working towards extending the services and budget of the NDIS to give further support to disabled people, not surveilling and policing them into ridiculous compliance expectations and further scrutinising their requests for care and support.
