National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026
Submission 686
To whomever is reading this letter,
I wanted to write after reading about the proposed NDIS changes because I felt it was important to share some of my concerns.
I do not work in disability support myself, however I have family friends with disabilities and my daughter works within the disability sector. Through conversations with her and through people around me, I have become more aware of how much support services can impact everyday life.
The proposed changes surrounding community participation supports are something I have continued thinking about. I think it is easy for people to underestimate how important these supports are. Being able to leave the house, see friends, and participate in activities is something many people naturally do, but for some individuals these opportunities rely heavily on support.
The proposed changes relating to what is considered “reasonable and necessary” also concern me. Families naturally want to help and support the people they love, but families are also human. They become tired, stressed and overwhelmed too. Support systems should exist to help people and families, not leave them carrying increasing pressure.
I also found myself thinking about the proposed changes surrounding framework planning. Everybody is different. Even people with similar disabilities can have completely different needs, personalities and goals. I would hate to see people become numbers on paper rather than individuals with their own circumstances.
I also have concerns regarding the proposed changes around eligibility and treatment requirements. Medical decisions are personal and I believe people should continue to have choice regarding decisions that affect their own health and bodies.
The biggest thing I kept coming back to while reading about these changes is that behind every policy, funding decision and assessment there are real people and real families.
I appreciate the opportunity to provide feedback and hope that whatever changes move forward continue putting people and quality of life first.
Kind regards,
