National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026
Submission 859
To whom it may concern
I am writing as a carer for my partner, who is a quadriplegic as a result of a brain injury and requires constant support with daily living activities. I strongly oppose the NDIS Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026 because it poses serious risks to the health, well-being, and dignity of my partner.
Current supports allow my partner to live safely, access therapy, and participate in the community. Cutting or limiting these services would have immediate, harmful consequences:
People with disabilities lacking adequate support are twice as likely to experience preventable hospitalisations. Over 40% of Australians with severe disabilities already experience mental health challenges, which will worsen if supports are reduced.
Carers like myself are facing immense stress. Over one in three report poor mental health due to caregiving demands. Changes to this Bill would shift more responsibility onto families, increasing burnout, financial strain, and the risk that I cannot meet the needs of my partner and my family, as I would have to give up work to provide care for her.
This bill also contradicts principles of equity, inclusion, and human rights. People with disabilities deserve to live with independence, dignity, and access to the community. Reducing support will isolate her and undermine Australia’s obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The impact is real, personal, and immediate. Blocking this bill is not just a policy decision— it is a moral one. I urge the Senate to protect the lives, well-being, and dignity of people with disabilities and their carers.
