Key improvements since October 2024

Since 9 October 2024, new or reassessed participant plans include:

  • Funding component amounts — funding allocated for specific supports or support groups.
  • Funding periods - the time that part of a participant’s funding becomes available and how long it needs to last.

What this means for payments

For plans that include funding periods, the NDIA is legally required to ensure payments do not go over:

  • The total plan funding
  • The funding component amounts
  • The funding periods

If a claim exceeds the available funding, it won’t be paid. This applies to participants and anyone managing funds on their behalf, including plan nominees, child representatives and plan managers.

Section 45(5): Exceptional payment circumstances

In 4 specific situations, the NDIA may approve payments above the funding limits in a participant’s plan.

These are outlined in Section 45(5) of the NDIS Act and are designed to protect participants from gaps in essential support.
