Funding Repairs, Maintenance of Tablets Considered R&N Before 3rd Oct 2024
The contents of this document are OFFICIAL and for INTERNAL USE ONLY.
Since the NDIS Support Lists were released on 3rd October 2024, Tablets and apps are not considered NDIS supports unless deemed suitable replacement supports by TAPIB. This document is for NEC branch delegates to assess if funding for repairs, maintenance for Tablets (e.g., iPads) deemed reasonable and necessary before 3rd October 2024 is acceptable.
Context
Before 3rd October 2024, Tablets could be funded under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) if they were considered “reasonable and necessary” and included in a plan to address a participant’s functional impairment.
Where a Tablet was funded prior to 3rd October 2024 and continues to address a functional impairment (e.g., supporting a child with communication needs through specialised apps), it remains treated as a NDIS support for repairs, maintenance or consumables while the Tablet is still addressing the functional impairment for which it was previous funded.
Case Examples
- Funded Pre-3rd October 2024: Addressing a Functional Impairment
A child with a speech delay was approved for a Tablet as a reasonable and necessary support before 3rd October 2024. The Tablet is equipped with a specialised communication app that helps them express their needs and interact with others. It continues to play a vital role in addressing the child’s functional impairment.
OFFICIAL
ndis.gov.au Page 1 of 908
FOI 24/25-2169 OFFICIAL
Because it still meets this need, repairs and maintenance for the Tablet can be funded in the child’s NDIS plan.
Note: This may include their current plan or the inclusion of reasonable and necessary funding in a new plan.
- Funded During COVID Lockdowns: Not Addressing a Functional Impairment
During the COVID-19 lockdowns, a Tablet was purchased with NDIS funds to help a child attend telehealth therapy session. While it was useful for overcoming temporary barriers during lockdown, it is not being used to address a functional impairment. The Tablet is now used for general entertainment purposes. Repairs, maintenance, or consumables for the Tablet would not be eligible for NDIS funding.
Understand If a Tablet Is Assistive Technology
To understand if a Tablet considered reasonable and necessary prior to 3rd October 2024, is being used as assistive technology addressing a functional impairment, ask yourself these questions:
Question Yes No
- Was the Tablet a reasonable and necessary NDIS support for the ☐ ☐ child prior to the 3rd of October 2024?
Tip: You may need to check previous plan comments and or justifications.
-
Is it equipped with specialised apps or features tailored to the ☐ ☐ child’s disability?
-
Does it continue to address a specific functional impairment, such ☐ ☐ as helping a child with communication?
If all responses are yes, NDIS funding can be used for Tablet repairs, maintenance, or consumables, if the plan allows.
For any no responses, please discuss the next steps with your Team Leader.
