Add low cost assistive technology supports in a plan

This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will help you add low cost assistive technology (AT) supports in the participant’s plan.

Recent updates

February 2022 Plan developers update the How Often field to reflect the amount of low cost AT the participant needs during their plan.
September 2021 Update to reflect support item is $1.00 in NDIS Business System.

  • discussed with the participant the amount of funding they need for Low Cost AT Or
  • referred to Fact sheet – Assistive technology – Guide for low cost support funding
  • received Technical Advisory Branch (TAB) advice, if needed
  • checked the participant’s record for AT related interactions or inbound documents, including in the ATHM tile
  • determined what AT is reasonable and necessary
  • spoken to the participant about their preferred plan management option
  • checked the request for AT does not relate to:
    • a primary request of a participant requested review (s 48 request) |

  1. From the participant’s record select Determine the Funded Supports in Planning — Staff Tasks.
  2. Select Core.

  1. Select the Expander in the Consumables price field to open the support calculator.

  2. Select Add Row (plus sign) in the Support Calculator.

  3. Select the Expander in the Product field.

  1. Enter Low Cost in the Product search field. Choose the support item from the list.

  2. Complete the following:

  • Quantity: enter the number of units (1 unit = $1).
  • How Often: select the option for the amount of support the participant needs during their plan. For example, if the participant needs replacement knee sleeves each year select Per Year. If the participant only needs the item once during their plan, select Once.
  • Item Type: leave blank.

  1. Add support items for each low cost category the participant needs. For example if the participant needs walking sticks and a doorbell alert, add the personal mobility item and the hearing related item in their plan.
  2. Select Done.
  3. Add the following Comment in the Consumables section:

Funding for assistive technology: $ to buy low cost assistive technology, and minor repairs to my assistive technology. This will support me to pursue my goals and outcomes.

  1. Add capacity building supports using Standard Operating Procedure – Add assistive technology capacity building supports in a plan.

Next steps

  1. Check you have included all other reasonable and necessary supports. Refer to relevant Planning resources when you complete the remaining steps to develop the participant’s plan.
