Government of Western Australia Submission – Inquiry into Current Scheme Implementation and Forecasting
Thank you for your email of 7 October 2021 regarding the Joint Standing Committee (Committee) on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Inquiry into Current Scheme Implementation and Forecasting for the NDIS. The Government of Western Australia welcomes the opportunity to make a submission to the Inquiry.
I am pleased to provide the attached submission on behalf of the State Government.
The State Government remains firmly committed to the NDIS and its key principles and shares the commitment to achieving better outcomes for participants as well as a sustainable scheme. Our submission points to key areas for improvement, including responsive and accurate planning decisions, market development in regional and remote areas, and Specialist Disability Accommodation. The submission also emphasises the need to co-design NDIS reforms with participants and the sector, and the central governance role of Disability Ministers.
The State Government is committed to providing accessible and inclusive non-NDIS services for people with disability, consistent with Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021-2031, and Western Australia’s State Disability Strategy 2020-2030. Our submission puts forward that improving coordinated responses between the NDIS and mainstream services, for individuals in crisis or at key transition points, is central to both improving participant outcomes and reducing the lifetime cost of supports.
I look forward to the Committee’s findings, in the hope that the final report to Parliament will allow the Commonwealth Government to set a clear direction for NDIS reforms that meets the expectations of stakeholders.
