Experiences of children with Asperger's and Down Syndrome accessing NDIS support

National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Getting the NDI Back on Track No. 1) Bill 2024

Submission 284

Why are people with mental health issues receiving NDIS, they need specialised support which is psychological or psychiatrical support. Not to be taken to shops, movies, holidays, bowling etc.

An example: A friend of mine has a 17 year old son, he attends mainstream schooling with no aide as he is high functioning Asperbergers. Mother was hesitant to apply for NDIS in 2018 as she stated her son would not qualify as he is high functioning. I pushed her stating he may be eligible for Funding to attend specialist such as occupational therapists or behaviour specialist. He plays sport, has friends and communicates clearly his needs.

He qualified and received a high package which was higher than my son who was born with Downs Syndrome, intellectual disability, attended a Special Development School and now attends an Adult Day centre who will always need full time support.

This shows the failure of NDIS.

NDIS encourages and has introduced criminals and carers who do not have the participants best interest and safety as the main goal but how to line their pockets with taxpayer monies.

How can the government continue to have a system still continue that is so flawed.

DHS had a fairer system with Individual Support Packages that only the “most vulnerable “ accessed.

Everyone wants to be a carer and /or opening companies and agencies to support their lifestyle and not about the participant.
