Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
It is disjointed and disengaged from creating positive outcomes - meaning we can’t get what we want when we want it. Little continuity in service and with the people it. Have to fill in zillions of paperwork for little financial support ie. medical plans take hours and you only get 5 free visits Waiting times for service are ludicrous. We access professionals from Sydney, Bathurst, orange and Dubbo. Travel is awful and time consuming and expensive don’t get me started on iptas (seriously useless) Equipment and home mods. We generally just pay for it ourselves, it’s less stressful even if the stress of cost is there.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
- Better access to mainstream support and services,
- People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Therapy and allied health services,
- Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
- Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
It will give us and our child choice voice & control over basic needs and rights.
That’s it in a nutshell. I’m so tired of fighting for every little (and big) thing. I want it to be easier. It’s hard enough already.
