Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

Our cousin needs a lot of care and support to enable him to lead the best life possible. Information on available support and resources is not always readily available, let alone the actual support. There needs to be a much clearer understanding of what services, and equipment is available in order to place such resources on hand for those most in need.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

  • Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
  • The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person,
  • Access to reliable information about support options

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

  • Therapy and allied health services,
  • Education support (technology/services/equipment),
  • Life-skills

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

We support the NDIS, because it will provide better services for disabled people including our 4year old cousin who is severely disabled. We hope that the NDIS will provide more certainty, for proper treatment and care, for our cousin, his parents and grandparents. We hope it will provide support, services and equipment which will allow him to lead the best possible life he can under the restrictions of his disability.
