Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

It takes far too long to receive support and services. Your “file” is closed when the so called current “need” has been met as if the disability has just gone away. When a further support is required in the future, you have to seemingly start from the beginning / go through an intake service explaining your situation & can go on a waiting list for therapy services regularly waiting at least 18 months. Respite services are insufficient in frequency and duration. ADHC respite, for over 18 year olds in the Newcastle region, has one house available at Maryland. Therefore it is common to have 18-20 years in with people who are 40-60 years old. There are not enough suitable accommodation placements available which suit the whole family.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

-e Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, -e The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, -e Less red tape, with planning done locally by people who know their community

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

-e Therapy and allied health services, -e Accommodation options, -e Positive behaviour support and psychological services

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

To make life better for people with disabilities & their carers.
