Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

Under current arrangements, there is hardly any support for my daughter who is suffering from a chronic illness. I am her main carer, and I am nearly 70. I do not know what will happen under the current system if I should be unable to be there for her.

She needs a flexible support system designed to meet her specific needs. This could include physical support in the home when needed, transport to shops and medical appointments, picking up prescriptions, and a secure housing situation suited to her needs. It would also help if those administering the disability support scheme had an attitude which was respectful and helpful instead of making the disabled feel as if they were receiving charity and should be grateful for any scraps which fall from the table.

I would also like to see emphasis placed on counsellors to help those with a disability find a place in society whether it be part-time work or some other appropriate community engagement.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

  • People with a disability can choose the types of support to use,
  • Better access to education and work opportunities,
  • The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

  • Accommodation options,
  • Flexible in-home/outside home respite,
  • Case management, planning and coordination

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

To enable all Australians including those with a disability to live fulfilling dignified and happy lives.

To remove the stigma of disability.

To recognise and provide support for those who are caring for those with disabilities.

To make us all feel proud that we have a society that cares for those who need help.
