ePlease consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
My father has MND and is not able to get access to use necessary equipment that would enhance the quality of his life. If he had access to certain equipment it would make him more independent which in turn would relieve the pressure on my mother (his carer) and as a whole on my father’s state of mind.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
- Better access to mainstream support and services,
- More opportunities to participate in the community,
- More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare,
- Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
- Support for families and carers,
- In-home care and domestic assistance,
- Flexible in-home/outside home respite,
- Positive behaviour support and psychological services
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
It’s the right step towards creating more support and independence for those who are disabled in some way which in turn would put less pressure on family carers and the mind of those who are disabled.
