Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
Being involved in a motor vehicle accident nearly 7 years ago, my Disability is “new”.
I have contacted Disabilities SA for some assistance, as I now live alone - and previously when I had a child in my care also - but apparently my “Disability” or me isn’t eligible for assistance
By Centrelink - Federal Laws - I can not work and can not be re-trained because current funding doesn’t cover someone with my life experience (I completed year 12 - about 20 odd years ago) and I am unable to work in any previous occupations I have kept
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
- People with a disability can choose the types of support to use,
- More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare,
- People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams,
- Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family,
- Access to reliable information about support options
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Therapy and allied health services,
- Accommodation options,
- Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
The NDIS affects a lot of people and as currently there seems 2 be 2 many separate “agencies” set up to co-ordinate things and I know disabled people who are struggling because they just can’t seem 2 get the right help
