Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

There are insufficient services both during crisis times, and also during the long periods of chronic illness.

During a crisis it is important to get help 24/7, when you need it. Carers cannot always deal with seriosly ill family members.

After decades of chrinic illness carers are exhausted by the constancy of the carer role, and the impacts on daily life.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
• People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams,
• People with disability/family will influence the types of support and services offered

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Life-skills,
• Support for families and carers,
• Crisis and emergency support

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

We need to take out the “lottery effect” of who gets support and when. Everyone with a disability needs to get the support needed at appropriate times, and the long term support for chronic illness is essential so that sufferers can lead meaningful lives, and participate in their community activities.
