Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

It dosn’t work for our family as it is not holistic looking at the carers needs as well as the person with a disability. It the carer is not supported then who will support the person with the disability. Carers save the government alot of money.

The current system is inefficient, it is not individualised and it is not flexible to families needs.

The current system does not value the informal support networks such as family and friends that assist a family much more and for longer. It needs to be recognised and Carers should be able to reimburse families for the additional support they provide. The system is all about paid workers where the costs are extreme, even if a paid worker is not required.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

  • People with disability can choose who comes into their home,
  • The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person,
  • Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

  • Recreation and community access,
  • Support for families and carers,
  • Flexible in-home/outside home respite

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I support it in the aim:

  • that our family will be able to access services that are flexible

  • system is holistic ensuring carers are supported as well.

  • individulised

  • more respite support

  • hoping it will cater for people with moderate intellectual disability to be supported in all areas emotionally, environmentally, physically and socially. hoping that the funding will be enough and that there will be options in disability and mainstream services.

  • I would love our son to be supported in a mainstream workplace he has been in a mainstream school system.
