ePlease consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
Because: some things we are entitled to and receive, some things we are ineligible for - glory only knows why. Why can’t my daughter get speech therapy?
She needed a new wheelchair - the one she had was 15 years old. We had to pay for it ourselves. Our daughter is funded recurrent for accommodation - what will happen when the NDIS is legislated.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
- People with a disability can choose the types of support to use,
- The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Therapy and allied health services,
- Accommodation options,
- Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I believe that all disabilities are equal regardless of origin. ie birth trauma, motor vehicle accident, work accident, or genetic. Our daughter has a genetic chromosome deletion without family history, nobody to blame, no gynaecological misshap. no compensation. she requires 24 hour care which is expensive but necessary. She has no language, limited mobility, a severe intellectual disability, epilepsy, and a myriad of other conditions which prevent her from being independent. Compare with MVA where compensation is paid out for future care and loss of earnings.
