Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

I am a single parent in my early 70’s I have chronic health issues. My daughter has the disability Down Syndrome and she is aged 27 years old. I need to know my daughter will not be put into a disability centre to live when i am no longer able to look after her myself. I need to know she can stay in the family home which she knows is hers and has all her own personal things around her and her township know her.Where she is able to go to her Program,work,social groups and her Church her faith is very important to her. To be able to have a Support worker at night and sometimes in the day time as required if unwell etc. This is the worry of many of her friends parents.We live in outer Melbourne and ural areas. I hope this will be taken into consideration as you make decisions for the futures of our children who have never lived in the city or suburbs of Melbourne Thank you.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

  • Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
  • The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person,
  • Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family,
  • Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

  • Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
  • In-home care and domestic assistance,
  • Case management, planning and coordination

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Firstly I adopted a baby girl as a single parent she has the disability Down Syndrome. I have given her every opportunity life could give her so she could experience life to the full. Both in health,education,social and faith. She is a very happy young woman. I want to make sure this continues for the rest of her life being able to live in her own home with support and in the community she knows. I want this for every young or old person with a disability. For those young ones who are unable to live in their own homes to live and be supported in a top care facility with other disabled people of their own age and never to be plonked in an Age Facility again. I want parents and carers to be given the support they need to live happy,healthy and full lives with the care their sons or daughters require to live the same full lives.
