Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

The pension simply does not cover the costs involved in having a child with a disability. I cannot find decent work because of the lack of available care for my child so I am in a situation where I have poverty to look forward to in my old age.

Plus with the lack of available care for my child I have the problem of having my child living with me for the foreseeable future, when he should be with his peers like any other young person.

The impact of having a child with a disability/disabilities takes a toll not only on the parent and child but the siblings as well. What happens when I die, the responsibility will fall on the shoulders of my other children.

Families with a child with a disabilities/disabilities are not being catered for in all aspects of the current disability system. We have been let down by successive governments. It is insulting.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

  • Better access to mainstream support and services,
  • Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family,
  • Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

  • Support for families and carers,
  • In-home care and domestic assistance,
  • Case management, planning and coordination

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I suppor the National Disability Insurance Scheme because the current system is a total failure. The scheme I hope delivers what it promises.
