ePlease consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

I don’t feel I should be making these detailed statements as I do not care for someone first hand with a disability, although there are many issues with the system.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
• People with disability can choose who comes into their home,
• Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
• Support for families and carers,
• Accommodation options

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

A very close friend of mine has a daughter with cerebral palsy. I have been a part of her life and for 17 years and watched the day to day routines we all take for granted as able bodied people. Finding support within the system for much needed modifications to existing equipment and the need for new equipment that is part of her daily life has always been an issue and will only become bigger as she ages. Without family and friends my friend would have little emotional, financial or physical support when needed for her daughter.
