Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
I have had a 13 year journey with my child 8 days respite. My mother in-law came to live in our house and a carer came in for 8 hours per day. We were |required to pay half the cost of this carer - over $700. Add this to the cost our “holiday” and you can understand why it only happen once. The “holiday” was a 40 minute drive from home as their was an equipment failure the day before and felt we needed to accessible at short notice.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
- Better access to mainstream support and services,
- Access to reliable information about support options
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Support for families and carers,
- In-home care and domestic assistance
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
The burden on families is taking too many to breaking point and marriages are not surviving without support.
