Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

I am a teacher of Children who have special needs. I see the problems that the families of these students have on a daily basis. I have seen families that have had to give up their children to the state, just so they can get the support they need. I have seen the guilt and angst that these caring parents have had to durere because they have not had the support that they needed and have had to walk away from their children just to survive or allow the rest of the family to survive. They should not have to go to those extremes!!

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
• People with a disability can choose the types of support to use,
• Better access to mainstream support and services

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Support for families and carers,
• Accommodation options,
• Flexible in-home/outside home respite,
• Positive behaviour support and psychological services

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Something has to be done to support the disabled person and his/her family in such a way that they are not driven to exhaustion and dispair. The system is not working at the moment and changes must be made to give quality of life to these families
