Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

Our daughter has Aspergers and is going to require assisted living and employment which will cater for someone with a disablilty as we live on a cattle property at Old Koreelah NSW.We live close to the border. We are closer to Warwick which is in QLD but we live in NSW. Any funding that we receive from NSW can’t be used in QLD. We don’t qualify for assistance in QLD as we live in NSW. Our closest town in NSW which has any services is 11/2 hours from us as compared to Warwick in QLD which is 1 hour from where we live. Our daughter goes to a dentist, physiotherapist and music lessons in Warwick. She is more familiar with Warwick and we have friends and family there as well which would provide her with a network of support. So a national system would enable to have a more normal life.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

  • People with a disability can choose the types of support to use,
  • Better access to mainstream support and services,
  • More opportunities to participate in the community

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

  • Employment support,
  • Recreation and community access,
  • Accommodation options

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I support the National Disability Insurance Scheme because we live on the QLD/NSW border and we have a daughter who has Aspergers who is going to require living away from home support as well as employment support. Our daughter is in year 11 so will be needing help in 2015. QLD is closer for her to live and work than NSW. We live in NSW so this is where we receive any funding which can’t be used in QLD.
