Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

My current ISP doesn’t allow me to do everything I would like to be able to do because I have to budget to cover personal care, equipment, therapies, etc. Since I’m on an ISP, I’m not entitled to receive funding to go on holidays with a carer, and therefore my Mum (my sole carer) doesn’t get lengthy respite. Also last year we got hours cut from our local government and are about to lose funding from DHS because they made a mistake in THEIR books two years ago!

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
• People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams,
• The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Recreation and community access,
• Support for families and carers,
• In-home care and domestic assistance,
• Crisis and emergency support

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Mum and I are extremely tired for fighting for EVERYTHING! I have self budgeted my ISP for many years and always am watching what I spend. I would love the freedom to plan things without worrying if I will have enough money to cover the “ basics“. Also anything to get out of having to deal with DHS would be fantastic!
