Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
Because life for my daughter with a disability and us her family has been and continues to be very difficult. For years we, her family, have been missing out on the sort of life other people take for granted. We have been extremely stressed. It has been difficult for me, the main carer, to be in the workforce, due to lack of care around school hours and during school holidays. As a result, and because our famiy broke down and I am now divorced, I have very little superannuation. Family holidays have been extremely difficult, due to our daughter’s needs.
We cannot plan for our daughter’s future, even though she is turning 20 and I am turning 54. There is no guarantee that she will get a suitable placement out of home once I cannot or do not want to take care of her full-time anymore. What will happen then? I have a lot of worry and sleepless nights.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are: -Support for families and carers, -Flexible in-home/outside home respite, -Case management, Planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I support the NDIS because I believe that it will improve the disability system and we need a change for the better, as things cannot go on the way they are at present.
I believe that as a society we have to take more responsibility for people with a disability and their families, as no one chooses disability but anyone can be seriously affected by disability from one minute to the next.
